The idea of “painting in order to leave the painting behind” lead Arnulf Rainer from painting with closed eyes to his well known overpaintings, which he has been producing since the beginning of the 1950s. The base coats of these works are found pictures or photographs. Variations of this concept range from overpainted grimace-photographs, expressive finger paintings, big size cross-series and landscape sceneries.
